San Clemente - Carjacker slams woman’s face into steering wheel
March 23, 2009 by OCCCWS Editor · Leave a Comment
A shaggy-haired man forced his way into a woman’s car at a freeway off-ramp by slamming her face into a steering wheel, then forced her to drive to an area where he robbed her, authorities said.
Now investigators released a composite of the robber in hopes that someone might have seen him standing at the freeway off-ramp and help authorities identify him.
The robbery occurred Friday at about 2 p.m., when a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, on her way home from Los Angeles, exited the I-5 freeway to get a bite to eat, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The woman left the freeway and was waiting at a stop sign at Avenida Califia when a man with dark shaggy hair and a long messy beard walked over to her car and knocked on the window, Amormino said. The woman rolled down her window slightly to listen to the man.
“He asked her, ‘Do you know where I can get something to eat?’” Amormino said.
The woman told him she was from San Diego and wasn’t familiar with the area, but the man said he couldn’t hear her. When she rolled down the window further he grabbed her by the back of the head and slammed her face into the steering wheel of the car.

Sheriff revokes gun permit for GOP heavyhitter
March 20, 2009 by Crassroots · 1 Comment
Sheriff Sandra Hutchens is taking aim at the most politically charged gun permit in Orange County.
Hutchens this week notified attorney Mike Schroeder, the main adviser and closest ally to former Sheriff Mike Carona, that she is terminating his permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Schroeder, the former chairman of the state Republican Party, said he’s not happy and plans to fight back.
“I believe that the action they are taking violates the law. And I’m reviewing what my legal options are at this point,” Schroeder said. “I do believe that the sheriff has very broad discretion as to whether or not to issue a CCW, yet her claims that the law requires her to refuse to issue CCWS in most circumstances is simply false.”
Schroeder added, “She should own the fact that she comes from a Los Angeles law enforcement perspective that is anti-gun and simply doesn’t want most people to be able to receive a (permit).”
Hutchens, former homeland security chief with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, was out of town Friday and could not be reached for comment.
She has repeatedly argued that Carona granted permits to individuals who did not show good cause under state law.

Anaheim: Two Southern California Gas Co. employees have been found shot to death.
March 18, 2009 by Crassroots · Leave a Comment
The killings took place miles apart within just a few hours.
The first victim was found in his vehicle Tuesday night in the company parking lot at 1919 State College Blvd. in Anaheim.
The second was found a few hours later at his home in Pomona, said Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmidt.
Police were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. to the business yard after an employee from an incoming shift saw the body of the man inside the vehicle, said Anaheim police Lt. K. Switzer.
The 37-year-old victim from Westminster has not been identified pending notification of relatives, Schmidt said.
The victim, who had been a gas company field technician for several years, worked from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Schmidt said.
Schmidt said the two shooting victims worked together at the Anaheim site until about six months ago when the Pomona man, who was a supervisor, was transferred to Pasadena.
Investigators from the Anaheim Police Department say they have ruled out murder suicide, but believe the deaths are related.
The utility issued a statement promising to cooperate in the investigation and calling it a “sad day at the Southern California Gas Company.”
“We’ve lost two of our co-workers and friends. We want to express our sincere sympathy to the families of the employees,” the statement says.
“The safety of our employees and customers is our top priority. We are doing all that we can to assist authorities in their investigation.”
Schmidt said anyone with information about the shootings was asked to call (714) 765-1900.

Santa Ana: More pre-teens joining O.C. gangs, report finds

Grand jury, surprised to find that juvenile gang membership is increasing, pleads for additional funding.
Gang prevention efforts should be spared the budget ax as membership in Orange County gets younger and younger, according to an Orange County Grand Jury report released Tuesday.
“When we began looking into the subject of children involved in gangs, we found very quickly that we had some major misconceptions about the problem, and we think it is very likely that the other citizens of Orange County share those misperceptions,” said Janet Buell, jury member and principle writer of the report.
The jury found few problems with crime prevention efforts in Orange County, and their recommendations were primarily to increase funding for preventative programs that are proving successful.

National: Obama Ends Armed Pilots
March 16, 2009 by Crassroots · Leave a Comment
After the September 11 attacks, commercial airline pilots were allowed to carry guns if they completed a federal-safety program. No longer would unarmed pilots be defenseless as remorseless hijackers seized control of aircraft and rammed them into buildings.
Now President Obama is quietly ending the federal firearms program, risking public safety on airlines in the name of an anti-gun ideology.
The Obama administration this past week diverted some $2 million from the pilot training program to hire more supervisory staff, who will engage in field inspections of pilots.
This looks like completely unnecessary harassment of the pilots. The 12,000 Federal Flight Deck Officers, the pilots who have been approved to carry guns, are reported to have the best behavior of any federal law enforcement agency. There are no cases where any of them has improperly brandished or used a gun. There are just a few cases where officers have improperly used their IDs.
Fewer than one percent of the officers have any administrative actions brought against them and, we are told, virtually all of those cases “are trumped up.”
